Humpback whales in Tonga
Hear the song of a humpback and you will never forget it
Tonga is a special place to visit – and if you go at the right time, you will be forever changed by
seeing these humpback whales mating and calving. You will observe these gentle giants
swimming with babies and engaging in heat runs. The excitement level is high on this trip;
there’s nothing like hearing the song of a humpback whale as he tries to encourage a female to
mate with him. Conservation is a top priority among the locals, who do their best to ensure that
the whales have a safe place to mate and birth.
Our trips offer small, intimate close-up encounters with the whales, we limit our boat to 6
participants per trip which give your plenty of water time with the whales. Your trip will focus
on the breathtaking coral-formed island of Vava’u. This special island is protected from winds,
ensuring you will get plenty of pristine water conditions with the whales. You will be able to
observe these gentle giants breaching, spy-hopping, fin-slapping, and more. The mother whales
protect the babies but often will escort their ‘little’ ones to the snorkelers for a visit. Not only
will you be able to swim with the whales you will be able to experience the hauntingly beautiful
whale songs throughout the trip.
Not only is Tonga the premiere location to swim with whales it also offers beautiful and
relatively untouched coral reefs which are home to thousands of colorful fish and corals. We
will also introduce you to some of our favorite local heroes who are working tirelessly to help
ensure that this special spot is preserved. You will learn about the unique culture of Tonga and
be able to ‘hang’ with the locals as the people of Tonga are friendly and welcoming.
